2 vintage 70s mugs from Staffordshire Pottery. The mugs are from the Kiln Craft series and made of glazed ironstone clay. The pattern is reminiscent of a rooster or other bird animal. The color is a lovely cinnamon brown. Made in England.
Ironstone clay was developed in Staffordshire, UK in the 19th century and is sometimes classified as earthenware, but its vitrification makes it much closer to stoneware. Although often cited as containing the mineral ironstone, the clay does not actually contain this ingredient. Rather, the name derives from the clay's superior strength which allowed for the manufacture of ornamental objects of considerable size.
