Auktion

A heavy, traditional Chinese scroll weight or paperweight (used to hold rolled rice paper in place during calligraphy).

Casting technique: The underside reveals an uneven, raw, dark surface featuring a distinct central circular hole left by the casting core. Visible file or grinding marks run along the edges, indicating where the casting was smoothed to ensure the figure sits level—a classic sign of older, manual craftsmanship rather than modern machine production.

Patina and wear: Clear signs of wear are visible on the bronze surface (the patina has worn away to reveal the lighter bronz metal beneath on the nose, knee, and edges of the book), suggesting frequent use over a long period.

Age: Likely late 19th century (late Qing Dynasty) or early 20th century (Republic of China). A charming and genuine collector's item.
