Auktion

A large antique Swedish snuff dog—a traditional piece of folk art carved from wood.

The head is attached to a wooden peg that fits into the dog's body. To open the snuff container, one twists or pulls out the head to access the hollowed-out space inside the body.

Wood type and decoration: It is carved from a dense hardwood (likely birch or curly birch). It features a finely patterned coat texture created with wood-carving chisels and is stained dark or scorched in places to resemble a hunting dog, likely a setter or spaniel.

Age and markings: It bears clear signs of being a genuine handcrafted piece from the 19th or early 20th century. The patina and the hand-carved surface on the underside support this.

Markings: A handwritten number in pencil is visible on the underside (it appears to read "2000"). This is most likely an old inventory mark, a catalog number from a previous auction, or a price written by a collector.
