A ceramic bird. The signature incised into the raw clay on the base (reading "THORLIN") is the characteristic mark of the Gotland-based artist and ceramicist Anders Thorlin. Produced during the 1980s or 1990s.
The Artist: Anders Thorlin worked in Vible and later in Vänge on Gotland. As he has become best known in recent decades for his large-scale stone sculptures and public art commissions, these earlier, smaller ceramic figures are relatively rare.
Subject: The figure depicts a razorbill or common guillemot (often referred to locally simply as a "grissla" or "penguin". These seabirds nest in large colonies on the Karlsö islands off Gotland and are a classic motif in Gotlandic arts and crafts.
