Auktion

A decorative, embossed copper piece (often referred to as *chekanka* in Russian: чеканка) from Ukraine. Produced between the 1960s and 1980s.

• Regional symbolism (Lviv, Ukraine): The motif of the standing lion depicts the historical coat of arms of the city of Lviv in western Ukraine (a name that literally means "City of the Lion"). Large quantities of copper souvenirs and wall plaques featuring this specific lion motif were produced there.

• Soviet folk art (*Chekanka*): During the Soviet era, there was widespread mass production—as well as a significant amateur movement—of embossed copper plaques and trays used for home decoration. They were frequently sold in souvenir shops throughout the Union.

The piece is fitted with a hanging mechanism on the back.
